Mushy Peas


Peas are amazing!  They might seem a bit old fashioned (meat and two veg anyone?) but they’re packed full of the good stuff.  Protein rich, big on Vitamin C and a great source of fibre.  And did I say tasty?  What’s not to love.

If you don’t want any rogue non-vegan butter hiding in your mushy peas then I’m here for you.  I understand.  I hate it.  So I veganised it.

This is another easy-peasy (see what I did there?!) recipe that you can whip up in the same amount of time it would take to make your peas sans-mushy.  By all means play around with the ingredients, the amounts, or add in a few flavours that you think will enhance it.  Just remember to tell me what you did, so I can make it better next time!



2 cups of frozen petit poits (or your standard frozen peas)

2 x Tbsp vegan butter

1 Tbsp fresh mint, chopped

Juice of 1/2 lemon

Salt & pepper to taste


Add frozen peas, mint and vegan butter to a small saucepan.  Cover and simmer on low heat for 10 minutes.  Keep an eye on it as you don’t want the butter to fully evaporate or the peas to burn.

After your peas have cooked, add the lemon juice, salt and pepper, and stir to combine.


Transfer peas to a bowl and mash with a fork or masher until all peas are broken and mushy.  You can use a blender here but I prefer a chunkier texture that hand mashing gives the peas!

Serve immediately.


Time to cook: 10 minutes cooking, five minutes to mash = 15 minutes

On a scale of easy (1) to pull your hair out difficult (5) =  1 – Simmer and mash!
